Brazil creates new environmental agency

Law No. 11,516/07, published in Brazil’s official gazette of August 28 creates a new federal environmental agency: Instituto Chico Mendes de Conservação e Biodiversidade _. The new agency will be responsible for implementation, audit, management and monitoring of conservation units (areas of special natural interest), activities which were formerly under the jurisdiction of Brazil’s federal environmental agency _(Instituto Brasileiro do Meio Ambiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renováveis, or IBAMA).
