Civil procedure rules undergo celerity reform

Brazilian civil procedure rules are being updated to bring celerity to lawsuits in the country. Law 11.232 and Law 11.187, both enacted in 2005, came into force last June. The former simplifies recovery of debts by eliminating formalities that were earlier used by debtors as means for delaying payment. The latter reduces the cases in which the parties may appeal to the Superior Court while a definitive sentence has not yet been issued.
